History

The history curriculum at HFNIS gives children the foundations of knowledge of Britain’s past and the wider world. It encourages children to be curious about the past. It is a progressive curriculum which builds on the skills firmly established from the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Children are taught to consider their own identity and the time they live in as well as the relationships between different groups of people. Children are encouraged to discuss the nature of people’s lives and the process of change over time.

History teaching at HFNIS teaches children about recent and more distant history to enable children to acquire an understanding of time, events and people in their memory and their parents’ and grandparents’ memories. Children are supported to ask and answer questions and to use stories and historical sources to demonstrate their understanding of events from the past. They develop appropriate vocabulary of historical terms to enable them to do this. Children will know that the past can be represented in different ways. Through revisiting and consolidating skills, children build on prior knowledge, providing a framework within which to integrate new knowledge.

The high-quality teaching develops historical skills and concepts which are transferable to whatever period of history is being studied and ensures children are equipped for future learning.
