British Values Statement

At Higham Ferrers Nursery and Infant School, we believe in helping children understand the values that enable us to live together safely, respectfully, and happily in modern Britain.

These values help children to feel safe, valued, and free to be themselves, while learning to understand and appreciate others.

The government defines British Values as:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

We promote these values in an age-appropriate way, helping our children to feel prepared for life in modern Britain. Our approach closely reflects our own school values of Trust, Respect and Empathy, and is part of everyday school life.

You will see these values in action across our school in the following ways:

Democracy

  • Children are encouraged to share their ideas and opinions and to listen carefully to others.
  • In Key Stage 1, children take part in School Council elections, where representatives are chosen through voting, helping them to understand democracy in action.
  • In EYFS, children begin to develop this understanding by making simple choices, such as voting for stories or activities.

The Rule of Law

  • Children learn the importance of rules in keeping everyone safe and happy.
  • Through school and class rules, assemblies, and PSHE, children develop an understanding of right and wrong, fairness, and responsibility.
  • They learn that actions have consequences and that rules help to protect us all.

Individual Liberty

  • We encourage children to make choices in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Through our curriculum, including PSHE and computing, children learn about personal responsibility, expressing their thoughts and feelings, and how to keep themselves safe, including online.
  • Children are supported to develop independence and confidence in who they are.

Mutual Respect

  • Children are encouraged to listen carefully, value different viewpoints, and treat others with kindness and consideration.
  • Through learning and daily interactions, they develop positive relationships and learn to work cooperatively and support one another.
  • Adults model respectful behaviour at all times.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

  • At Higham Ferrers Nursery and Infant School, we go beyond tolerance and encourage children to value and celebrate diversity.
  • In Religious Education, children explore a range of religions, cultures, and traditions, helping them to understand the world around them and appreciate differences.
  • We also support children in developing an understanding of shared experiences and traditions that shape life in Britain.

British Values in School Life

You will see British Values in action through:

  • Religious Education and PSHE lessons
  • Collective Worship and assemblies
  • School Council and pupil voice
  • Daily interactions and behaviour
  • Celebrations, events, and community links

We work closely with families and the wider community to ensure all children feel supported, valued, and ready for the next stage in their lives. Through promoting British Values, we aim to support children in becoming thoughtful, confident, and responsible individuals who are ready to take their place in society.
